Welcome to this lesson on URL Redirection.
Whenever you redesign or reorganise your website, it's common for some page addresses, or URLs, to change.
For example, perhaps your old website had a page at contact-us, but on your new website the page is simply called contact.
Anyone using an old bookmark, clicking a link from another website, or finding the old page in a search engine would receive a 404 Page Not Found error.
That's frustrating for visitors, and it's not good for your website either.
Admin Tools makes it easy to redirect visitors from the old URL to the new one.
To do that, open Tools and select URL Redirection.
Click New to create a redirect.
The first field is Existing URL.
This is the old URL that visitors are still trying to access.
In this example, that's contact-us.
The second field is New URL.
This is where you want those visitors to be sent instead.
In this case, it's contact.
Save the redirect.
Now let's test it.
If I browse to the old contact-us address, Admin Tools automatically redirects me to the new contact page.
The visitor reaches the correct page without ever seeing a 404 error.
You should create redirects for any pages whose URLs have changed.
That way, visitors using old bookmarks, links from other websites, or search engine results will still reach the correct content instead of encountering broken links.
